What is a Work Capability Assessment?

The Work Capability Assessment (WCA) is used to determine whether you're eligible for Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) or the limited capability for work element of Universal Credit.

How to Prepare

Before the Assessment

  • Gather medical evidence
  • Keep a diary of your symptoms
  • Get support letters from healthcare professionals
  • Practice explaining how your condition affects you

During the Assessment

  • Be honest about your worst days
  • Don't minimise your symptoms
  • Take breaks if needed
  • Bring someone for support

After the Assessment

  • You'll receive a decision letter
  • You can request a Mandatory Reconsideration if you disagree
  • You have the right to appeal

Know Your Rights

  • You are entitled to:
  • Have someone accompany you
  • Request a home assessment if you cannot travel
  • Ask for reasonable adjustments
  • Record the assessment
